Researchers in Norway are working on a moist feed for Atlantic salmon prepared from alkaline preserved (pH 11.2) herring (Clupea harengus) filleting by-products, mixed with a crude binder based on seaweed. The mixture is then pelleted and immersed in acidic bath.

Some 12–15 million tonnes of bananas and 7–9 million tonnes of plantains could be available each year for use as livestock feed, according to the FAO.
September 23, 2008: Skretting Turkey begins construction of 100,000 mt aquafeed plant
Skretting invited some 80 guests to a ceremony in June marking the start of construction on for its new, 100,000 mt/year fish feed plant near Bodrum in Turkey.
The plant has a modular design and the first production line is scheduled to be in action by May next year. Subsequent building phases will expand the plant to three lines with a total capacity of 100,000 tonnes.

Sindiracoes, the Brazilian feed industry association, expects Brazil’s animal feed production will continue to grow in 2008 by 10.2 percent to reach a total of 59 million tonnes. The group expects Brazil to spend over USD 1.2 billion on feed additive imports in 2008.

The production method used by Guabi ensures that all the Potimar products are 100 percent sinking.

August 21, 2008: Kiotech completes Aquatice trials programme
Kiotech International has completed a seven-month trial of its Aquatice attractant to enhance the growth rate and feed conversion of catfish (Clarias sp.). The eight-pond trial was conducted in Southern Thailand. This was one of a number of Aquatice trials being carried out on a range of fish species in South East Asia and the first on catfish. The Aquatice treated ponds delivered double the number of large catfish, which command a premium price in the market and a significantly higher total yield, as well as improvement in feed conversion compared with the control ponds.
August 21, 2008: Lallemand-IFREMER partnership shows Bactocell benefits and modes of action for Summer Syndrome prevention in New Caledonian shrimp farms
A joint research programme between Canada’s Lallemand and IFREMER, the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, conducted by Mathieu Castex in Nouméa, New Caledonia, demonstrates that Bactocell® (Pediococcus acidilactici MA 18/5 M) in the feed of marine shrimps (Litopenaeus stylirostris) on farms usually affected by summer syndrome, reduces vibriosis-associated mortality by up to 15%. Shrimp yield has increased as a result. Bactocell was found to have positive effects on both shrimp digestive functions and gut-associated bacteria populations.
August 21, 2008: USDA/ARS opens National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center
The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has opened its new National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center (NCWMAC) in Orono and Franklin, Maine. Research activities at the Center will focus on improving the sustainability and profitability of cold water marine aquaculture and “ensure safe, abundant seafood for U.S. consumers”. Research at NCWMAC will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Maine’s Aquaculture Research Center in Orono and the university's Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) in Franklin.

August 21, 2008: World fish trade continues to grow, increases in complexity
The value of world exports of fish and fish products grew 9.5 percent in 2006 to US$86 billion and nearly 7 percent in 2007 to US$92 billion, according to the FAO. Fifty-five million tonnes, or 38 percent of world fish production (145 million tonnes) is now traded internationally.
