The aquaculture market, currently valued at over $300 billion, is on a path to grow to more than $400 billion by 2030. This growth is largely driven by a surge in sustainable practices, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, where demand for aquaculture products is soaring, aided by government support, notes Canadian biotechnology company Bionetix.
“Probiotics are the perfect complement to current aquaculture needs because they simultaneously support better productivity and sustainability,” Bionetix stated.
One notable product, AQUA-FEED™, is a natural feed additive packed with β-glucans, mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS), beneficial probiotics, and essential vitamins and minerals. This additive can be mixed into fish and shrimp feed to improve overall health.
Another innovative solution is BCP54™, which can be applied directly to aquaculture ponds. This product helps enhance water clarity, reduces suspended solids, and promotes a balanced microbial environment. By utilising microbial consortia, BCP54™ accelerates the breakdown of organic waste—like faecal matter, leftover feed, and detritus—through enzymatic hydrolysis. It also assists in nutrient management by converting harmful nitrogenous and phosphatic compounds into useful biomass while effectively lowering ammonia and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) levels in the water.
As the aquaculture industry continues to evolve, probiotic solutions are poised to play a crucial role in meeting future demands sustainably.
