Coldep has been selected by Pure Salmon Technology to supply its VAL2000 vacuum-flotation technology and associated engineering services for a new land-based Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) in Japan.

The project will be the largest aquaculture installation of Coldep’s Vacuum Air Lift (VAL) technology delivered worldwide to date.

Engineered for demanding water environments

The facility will operate with salt water, created by adding or dosing salt into fresh water, making it one of the more challenging media for recirculating aquaculture. In this environment, water quality must remain continuously stable to ensure reliable operation and preserve final product quality.

Built around the VAL2000 system, the water-treatment solution is designed to provide dependable long-term performance, with an emphasis on maintainability, energy efficiency and operational simplicity. These characteristics help reduce total lifecycle costs while supporting consistent water quality over time.

“Water recirculation is one of the most demanding environments in aquaculture,” said Sébastien Latz, CEO of Coldep. “Being selected to supply the water-treatment core of this facility is a strong validation of the VAL system’s performance and reliability at industrial scale.”

Proven performance at industrial scale

With more than 140 installations worldwide, VAL technology is a core component in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems and purification basins. Since Coldep joined Nijhuis Saur Industries last year, VAL has become an integral part of NSI’s portfolio of solutions for raw water, RAS and wastewater treatment.

What is VAL?

VAL is a turnkey flotation package installed at the heart of the recirculation loop. It integrates with the operator’s oxygen supply, including liquid oxygen (LOX) or pressure swing adsorption (PSA) systems, as well as electrical and automation infrastructure. The system is supported by worldwide manufacturing and delivery capabilities.

As an evolution of flotation and protein-skimming technology, VAL is engineered for containerised global shipment and efficient on-site integration. Its treatment train removes dissolved organic matter, fine particulates and foam from marine recirculation loops. It can also be combined with ozone dosing to support off-flavour control, including geosmin and MIB removal.

Although this project is focused on RAS, VAL technology is also used in shellfish production and purification systems, demonstrating its versatility across aquaculture applications.
