The University of Stirling has named Laila Al Farsi as the first recipient of the Nikos Steiropoulos Aquaculture Bursary, sponsored by MSD Animal Health UK. The award supports students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable aquaculture, aquatic pathobiology, or aquatic veterinary studies at the university’s Institute of Aquaculture.
Al Farsi, a graduate of the University of Stirling’s undergraduate program in aquaculture, expressed her gratitude for the financial support. “It has eased a significant financial burden and allowed me to focus on my studies and personal growth,” she said. Al Farsi had initially discovered aquaculture by chance but developed a deep passion for the field, later securing a job at the university’s Nutritional Analytical Service before pursuing her master’s degree.

The bursary honours Nikos Steiropoulos, an alumnus of the University of Stirling who had a 20-year career in the aquaculture industry. MSD Animal Health UK’s Vicki Farr commented that Steiropoulos would have been proud to see the next generation of professionals supported in this way, furthering the growth of the aquaculture sector.
The Nikos Steiropoulos Aquaculture Bursary will support one student each year for the next five years, continuing MSD Animal Health UK’s commitment to fostering innovation in the aquaculture industry.
