AI-Powered Fish Farming Technology Secures NOK 100M Funding

Norwegian aquaculture technology company Biosort has raised more than NOK 100 million (approx US$10 million / £7.7 million) from a consortium of investors — including Grieg Kapital, Hatch Blue, IVC, Farvatn and Futurum Ventures — to bring its individual-based sea lice control system to market.

The capital will support the final development and commercial rollout of a next-generation lice control technology designed to detect and remove lice at early attachment stages on individual salmon, reducing the need for large-scale, whole-pen interventions. Biosort’s approach combines AI-driven machine vision with its FishID platform, which identifies and tracks individual fish to target lice removal more precisely and continuously, potentially improving fish welfare, lowering mortality and minimizing the use of well-boat treatments.

Founded in 2010 and known for its multi-year iFarm precision farming project in partnership with salmon producer Cermaq, Biosort has now completed the development licences and foundational technical breakthroughs from that initiative. The knowledge and infrastructure from iFarm are being leveraged to pivot toward a simplified, compact product that prioritises early lice intervention and individualised fish health management.

“There is a clear shift in the salmon industry toward stronger focus on fish health and greater adoption of new technology. Through Blue Revolution Fund, we invest in next-generation aquaculture solutions that improve health and sustainability,” said Carsten Krome, Managing Partner at Hatch Blue.
