The 2024 Aquaculture Awards celebrated the achievements of leading figures in the industry at a festive dinner during the Aquaculture UK conference. The event, held at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore, drew a full house from across the sector and was hosted by comedian Fred MacAulay. A total of 13 awards were presented to outstanding companies and individuals over the past year.
The Rising Star award was shared by two young professionals: David Lipcsey, an IT engineer at Scottish Sea Farms, and Silvia Viale, a regional health manager at Mowi.
Ace Aquatec and Tiny Fish received the Collaboration award for their innovative project to reduce waste and enhance the circular economy by converting non-viable fish from the freshwater stage into safe pet food and fish oil ingredients. Ace Aquatec also won the Innovation award for its A-Biomass camera, which uses advanced AI and machine learning to monitor fish health and welfare.
The Sustainability award went to net supplier W and J Knox, which developed predator netting that is easier to recycle, thereby diverting nets and ropes from landfills and promoting environmentally friendly disposal methods.
One of the most prestigious awards, Farmer of the Year, was awarded to Thomas Begg of Bakkafrost Scotland. Described as a “true Hebridean hero,” Begg was honored for his decades of dedication to the sector, his inspirational leadership, and his commitment to nurturing young talent.
John Holmyard of Offshore Shellfish was named Best Producer of the Year for his pioneering work in offshore mussel farming. Holmyard was also recognized for his efforts to collaborate with government, industry, funders, academics, and other aquaculture experts to address post-Brexit challenges and advance the sector.
The Judges Special Recognition award went to Sarah Riddle of Northern Light Consulting. Riddle has made significant contributions to the aquaculture sector through her roles as a consultant, business engagement leader, innovator, auditor, educator, and mentor.
Event director Cheri Arvonio congratulated all the winners and those shortlisted, noting the record number of entries this year. “The standard was very high, reflecting the wealth of talent, initiative, dedication, and achievement in the sector. We are proud to recognize and celebrate such excellence,” she said in a press release.
