The Centre for Aquaculture Technologies (CAT) has launched a low-density genotyping panel aimed at enhancing selective breeding efficiency for Black Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon).
The panel is designed to help hatcheries make faster, data-driven decisions in both new and established breeding programs. It enables analysis of relatedness, population structure, parentage, and genetic sex, while maintaining a balance between data quality and cost.
According to CAT, the new tool supports more targeted and practical breeding strategies. Dr. Klara Verbyla, Vice President of Genetic Improvement at CAT, said the panel offers actionable insights without requiring high-density marker sets, making it suitable for operations looking to maximise return on investment.
Oscar Hennig, Senior Advisor and Commercial Shrimp Production Expert at CAT, highlighted the panel’s ability to meet the demands of real-world breeding programs. He said the product helps producers improve performance without excessive complexity or cost.
The release of this genotyping panel follows a recent study on Brazilian Black Tiger shrimp populations and reflects broader industry demand for sustainable and efficient aquaculture practices.
CAT stated that the panel offers rapid turnaround times and strong internal quality control measures. The company views the launch as part of its broader mission to support productivity, sustainability, and global food security through genetic innovation.
