DSM-Firmenich has partnered with Format Solutions to help feed producers manage the environmental impact of animal feed. The collaboration combines Format Solutions’ feed formulation software with DSM-Firmenich’s life cycle assessment (LCA) platform, Sustell™, allowing producers to quantify and reduce their feed’s carbon footprint.
The partnership responds to increasing pressure on the food and feed industry to cut greenhouse gas emissions. With food production accounting for a third of global emissions, companies face growing demands from regulators, consumers, and investors to track and reduce their environmental impact.
The collaboration allows feed producers to easily calculate their environmental impact using existing data from formulation software. By merging feed formulation data with the LCA platform, producers can generate ISO-compliant feed footprints with minimal effort. This integration prepares producers for upcoming feed labeling regulations and supports accurate emissions reporting across the food sector.
David Nickell, Vice President of Sustainability & Business Solutions at DSM-Firmenich, highlighted the significance of the alliance. “Animal feed is central to the food value chain. Integrating Sustell™ with Format Solutions’ software connects data across the entire farm-to-fork ecosystem, helping us address sustainability challenges and capture new market opportunities,” he said.
Ian Mealey, Product Marketing Director at Format Solutions, emphasized the impact of the partnership on feed manufacturers. “Working with DSM-Firmenich enables us to offer a powerful tool for quantifying the environmental footprint of feed production, which benefits the broader food and feed sector,” Mealey said.
The alliance aims to provide greater transparency across the food value chain, from feed producers to retailers. It also opens up new opportunities for sustainable finance, product eco-labeling, and participation in carbon trading initiatives, supporting the industry’s shift toward more sustainable practices.
