The European Commission has approved a €155 million initiative to improve sustainability in Denmark’s fishery and aquaculture processing industries. The scheme aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the seafood processing sector.
The funding, which will be available until 2029, will provide direct grants to large Danish fish processing companies investing in environmentally friendly energy technologies. The scheme is designed to support Denmark’s broader climate goals by promoting the adoption of cleaner energy solutions in the sector.
The Commission evaluated the program under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which allows State aid for specific economic activities under defined conditions. The program is aligned with the EU’s Guidelines for State aid to the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The approval signals Denmark’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of fish processing while fostering sustainable industry growth. The scheme has been deemed necessary and proportionate, with no negative effects on competition or trade between EU Member States.
