Finnish consumers are set to experience the world’s first rainbow trout raised on insect protein, thanks to a pioneering collaboration between four Finnish companies. The limited-edition product, Kalaonni Arkinen rainbow trout fillet, will be available for two weeks starting April 7, 2025. This marks the first commercial production of rainbow trout with insect protein included in its feed.
The collaboration involves Kalankasvatus Vääräniemi, which farmed the trout in Taivalkoski, Kalavapriikki, which is responsible for bringing the product to market, Volare, which supplies the insect protein, and Alltech Fennoaqua, Finland’s only fish feed manufacturer. This unique partnership covers nearly the entire aquaculture value chain—from ingredient supply and feed production to fish farming, wholesaling, and retailing.
In 2024, the companies conducted a global first trial, partially replacing conventional feed ingredients with insect protein. The successful trial led to the launch of this special edition product, which will be available in stores across Finland. Kalavapriikki CEO Jari Korhonen emphasized the importance of both sustainability and quality, stating that Finnish customers value sustainable choices while prioritizing taste and quality.
Volare produces insect protein by upcycling food industry side streams in an energy-efficient, fossil-free process that produces zero waste. The use of insect protein in the trout feed provides a sustainable, locally sourced alternative to imported protein concentrates, reducing the environmental footprint of aquaculture.
Volare plans to scale its insect protein production with a new full-scale industrial plant in Finland, which is expected to expand partnerships and further promote the use of sustainable, circular aquafeeds in the future. Alltech Fennoaqua’s CEO Tomi Kantola stressed the importance of supporting Finnish startups like Volare, noting that locally sourced insect protein not only benefits the environment but also strengthens Finland’s food security and employment.
