Kjetil Fyrand has transitioned from Pharmaq to head Nofima’s Fish Health Department, a role that places him at the forefront of fish health research.
Fyrand emphasised his enthusiasm for joining the organisation: “My motivation for joining Nofima was the opportunity to engage more broadly within fish health. At Nofima, fish health is at the heart of our research—whether it involves breeding, nutrition, or production environment.”
He will lead a team of 13 preventive fish health specialists based in Ås and Tromsø.
Linn Anne Brunborg, Division Director for Aquaculture and Fyrand’s supervisor, noted, “The Fish Health Department plays a crucial role in addressing and solving the challenges facing the industry.” She also remarked on Fyrand’s impressive background and current industrial PhD work, expressing confidence in his ability to bring fresh insights to the institute.
Fyrand resides in Oslo and possesses considerable international experience. He added, “I have had the pleasure of travelling extensively in previous roles. I see great potential for both Nofima and Norway to make an even stronger mark internationally in aquaculture and fish health.”
Fyrand holds a cand.scient. degree in fish health from the University of Bergen. During his time at Pharmaq, he focused on applied research and management, particularly in developing pharmaceuticals for the global aquaculture market. He is expected to complete his industrial PhD in fish vaccinology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences later this year.
