Laxey, a land-based salmon farming company based in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, has entered a multi-year agreement to use ReelData’s ReelWeight camera technology. This system is the world’s first AI solution specifically developed for land-based aquaculture, aimed at improving fish weight measurement.
The decision follows a successful trial where Laxey tested the ReelWeight camera in various tanks throughout their post-smolt facility. The camera, designed for easy transport between tanks, surpassed traditional manual methods, providing over 300 unique fish samples per hour and optimising weight assessment.
Hallgrímur Steinsson, COO/CTO of Laxey, stated, “The ReelWeight camera used through the trial period was set up and operational very quickly with minimal effort required to establish networking and connectivity. From that point, we worked with the ReelData team to understand how best to utilise the cameras and gain insight into each tank with a very fast turnover of measurements. We’ve been impressed not only by the functions and functionality of the camera but also by the support and service offered by the ReelData team. It made the decision to move from a trial to a full commercial agreement very easy for us.”
ReelData, headquartered in Canada, is expanding rapidly in the aquaculture sector. The partnership with Laxey enhances their presence in a growing industry, with ReelWeight cameras already deployed for other fish species, including Kingfish, Arctic Charr, and Trout across Europe, North America, and South America.
