DNV, a leading independent assurance and risk management provider, has launched an innovative AI-powered compliance solution, Smarter Compliance, designed to enhance operational efficiency in Norway’s fish farming sector. This new technology aims to significantly reduce manual documentation work, save costs, and help prevent fish escapes.
The Norwegian government has set stringent compliance requirements for the aquaculture industry, and DNV’s solution provides fish farmers with continuous oversight of their compliance status. Unlike traditional methods, which involve complex checks every five years, Smarter Compliance enables weekly monitoring, streamlining data sharing between internal teams and external regulators.
The technology integrates seamlessly with existing production and compliance systems, covering all essential factors from maintenance to legal regulations. It is particularly beneficial for offshore farms, where regular inspections are challenging.
“This new solution will allow us to move from a complete check every five years to checking continuously, which gives us increased control and peace of mind,” said Arve Storholm, Production Manager at GIFAS. He noted that having a single source of information would reduce document handling.
The move aligns with the Norwegian government’s push for fully digitalised reporting in the aquaculture sector. According to the report ‘Havbruksmeldingen’, automated solutions will help ease the workload caused by increased reporting demands.
Mads Arild Eidem, Director of Norway Aquaculture Operations at DNV, highlighted that “stricter regulations and rising stakeholder expectations… are reshaping aquaculture. Our new digital service is built to meet this challenge, making it easier to handle complex requirements with clarity, control, and confidence.”
Svein Andorsen, Production Chief at Ellingsen Seafood, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Getting a status overview like this would give me peace of mind. If I know everything is in order, then I can focus my efforts on something else.”
