A recent trial has revealed that incorporating a small amount of high-performing insect protein into Atlantic salmon feed improves both yields and quality, while also increasing farmers’ profits. The study, conducted by Aller Aqua in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and Austevoll Melaks, showed that adding 4% of ProteinX black soldier fly meal to feed resulted in higher salmon yields, improved fillet quality, and better taste.
The trial, which compared a conventional diet with one containing ProteinX, demonstrated that salmon fed with the insect protein reached an average body weight 9.6% higher than the control group. Additionally, the gutted weight was 12.5% greater, resulting in more sellable fish. The study also showed improvements in key quality indicators, including firmness, gaping, colour, and reduced dark spots on the fillets.
In terms of taste, 70% of panelists preferred the flavour of salmon fed with ProteinX. This improvement in sensory quality, combined with higher yields, offers significant potential for farmers looking to maximise profits.

The tool allows users to input variables such as farm size and salmon price to estimate the increased profitability and reduced environmental impact of using the insect protein over traditional soy protein concentrate.
This study highlights the potential of insect protein as a sustainable and profitable alternative for the aquaculture industry. With global salmon production projected to rise by 40% by 2033, the use of high-quality insect ingredients offers a viable solution to meet growing demand while addressing environmental concerns.
