Peruvian authorities have set the first fishing season for anchovies in the North-central region, starting on 22 April, 2025, with a total quota of 3 million metric tonnes. The quota was determined following an assessment of anchovy biomass conducted by Peru’s scientific institute, IMARPE. A further analysis of the biomass will take place during the Eureka operation, scheduled from the 19 to 21 of April.
The announced quota is the largest since 2018, when it reached 3.32 million metric tonnes, and it is second only to the 3.68 million metric tonnes from 2011. Dr. Enrico Bachis, Market Research Director at IFFO, commented that the quota indicates a healthy biomass.
In February 2025, global fishmeal production rose by about 40% compared to the same period in 2024, driven largely by increases in Peru’s production. Other regions, including Chile, the USA, Spain, and several African nations, also saw positive trends. Meanwhile, fish oil production was up by 38% year-over-year, again primarily due to increased output from Peru.
The data used for this report comes from IFFO members in key producing countries, including Chile, the USA, Spain, and several others, which account for a significant portion of global fishmeal and fish oil production.
