Prof Abdel-Fattah M. El-Sayed, a professor emeritus at Alexandria University’s Oceanography Department, has been selected as a member of Egypt’s “Basic Sciences Sector Committee” for the term 2025-2028. The committee is tasked with overseeing the development of basic sciences—such as chemistry, physics, biology, geology, and mathematics—across Egyptian universities.
Prof El-Sayed is also an editorial board member for the International Aquafeed magazine.
During his tenure, Prof El-Sayed will contribute to a number of key responsibilities, including the development of university education policies to align with Egypt’s national development strategy. The committee will also work on improving the link between educational curricula and job market needs, establishing criteria for the creation of new academic institutions and specializations, and setting standards for measuring the performance of university colleges. Additionally, the committee will focus on shaping a unified research strategy to address priority issues aligned with the country’s development goals.
Prof El-Sayed earned a BSc in General Oceanography from Alexandria University in 1974, an MSc in Fish Biology and Fisheries from the same institution in 1979, and a PhD in Aquaculture Nutrition from Michigan State University in 1987. He has held visiting professor positions in Japan, Qatar, Spain, Malaysia, and the UAE, and has been an active contributor to various regional and international journals.
Throughout his career, Prof El-Sayed has been involved in numerous research projects, both locally and internationally, and has worked with organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the WorldFish, the European Union (EU), and the African Union (AU). His contributions to aquaculture and fisheries have earned him numerous accolades, including the Honorary Life Membership of the World Aquaculture Society in 2015.
