Salmofood, a brand of Vitapro, has received the ASC Feed certification for its production plant in Castro, Chiloé Island, Los Lagos Region. This certification validates the company’s responsible production standards in the aquaculture industry and ensures a sustainable supply chain.
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) awarded the certification after an audit conducted in August 2024. The ASC Feed standard, implemented in 2023, sets requirements for environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the ingredients used for aquaculture feed.
The certification covers areas such as greenhouse gas emissions management, energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, waste management, water conservation, and the protection of labor rights. It also requires responsible sourcing of raw materials, prioritizing supply chains free from deforestation and land conversion.
Jorge Ríos, Country Manager for Chile and Chair of the Global Aquaculture Team at Control Union, explained that the standard takes a holistic approach, involving both feed producers and their raw material suppliers. Francisco Valdés, Business Manager for Vitapro Chile, highlighted that the certification responds to the growing demand from consumers and markets seeking responsible products. He added that this achievement strengthens the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental and social well-being.
Ramiro Larios, Country Manager of Vitapro Chile, noted the significant impact of this certification on the salmon industry, which must meet high sustainability standards. He also mentioned that the company will continue pursuing additional certifications in the future. José Luis Trejos, Head of the Systems and Quality Management Department at Vitapro Chile, explained that the certification is the result of a detailed evaluation of suppliers and sustainable sourcing practices.
The ASC Feed certification is valid for three years and requires annual audits. Salmofood also holds other certifications, including GLOBAL G.A.P. and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).
