More than 200 seaweed industry experts gathered in Rotterdam for Seagriculture EU 2025 from 17–19 June. This year’s theme, “Seaweed 2.0: Today’s Scaling for Tomorrow’s Needs,” emphasised the industry’s push for responsible growth to meet growing global demand for sustainable products.
On the first day, attendees participated in site visits to learn about the seaweed sector. They could choose from Hortimare and NIOZ.
Hortimare presented their collection and farming methods, showcasing the intersection of science and commercial practices that support sustainable seaweed farming. At NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research hosted a meeting featuring seaweed research through various presentations. This was in collaboration with the NWO-KIC projects CircAqua, SeaSeeds, and From Sea to Society.
From 18–19 June, the main event featured five plenary sessions and two panel discussions, including the fast-paced Seaweed Elevator Pitches, allowing participants to share projects and ideas. Nearly 50 speakers provided insights into applications, farming techniques, and seaweed industry regulatory changes. Notable figures included Stefan Kraan from Oceana Organic Products Ltd and Annette Bruhn from Aarhus University.
Networking at Seagriculture EU 2025
The Seagriculture trade show attracted over 15 exhibitors presenting the latest technologies and services. It served as a hub for networking, with attendees interacting directly with industry stakeholders. Additionally, about 30 participants showcased their research through posters, enhancing discussions within the scientific community.
“This year’s edition offered a high-quality program and meaningful networking opportunities. We’re proud to support the community as it grows and connects,” said Kuno Jacobs, Managing Director at DLG Benelux.
The event utilised a dedicated networking app, facilitating over 140 pre-scheduled meetings and real-time updates, thus improving attendee engagement. The conference dinner at BlueCity provided a scenic backdrop for networking, allowing participants to enjoy local cuisine against the breathtaking Rotterdam skyline.
Seagriculture EU aims to advance innovation and sustainable practices in the seaweed sector.
