Blue Aqua’s indoor Rainbow Trout project is a milestone in aquaculture innovation and a model of responsible, environmentally conscious food production. As the first indoor Rainbow Trout farm in Southeast Asia, located in Singapore, the project shows how advanced technology and sustainable practices can make a traditionally cold-water species a viable local product in a tropical country.
By adopting recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology, the farm reuses more than 90 percent of its water, greatly reducing consumption compared to traditional pond or flow-through systems. This efficiency is especially critical in Singapore, where land and water are scarce, and food security is closely tied to sustainable resource management.
The state-of-the-art facility combines advanced RAS with robust chilling systems to maintain a controlled environment of 14-18°C, ideal for trout growth. This enables consistent development from egg incubation to market size, overcoming what was once considered an environmental barrier. The farm is designed as a closed-loop operation, including incubation, hatchery, nursery, grow-out and processing units. This integrated design allows strict biosecurity control at every stage while ensuring product quality and consistency.
Integrated farm design & capacity
The hatchery and nursery are equipped to produce up to 6.2 million Rainbow Trout fingerlings at 50 grams each. Once they reach this stage, the fish are transferred to the grow-out ModulRAS system, which can produce 1025 tonnes of market-size trout annually, typically of 400 to 600 grams each. Harvesting is scheduled five times per week, supplying the local market with 4.2 tons of fresh trout daily. This ensures year-round availability and directly contributes to Singapore’s food resilience.
At the centre of the grow-out facility is a unique endless raceway design. Adjustable partitions allow the compartment to expand as fish grow, optimising space and improving harvest efficiency. During harvest, water is never drained; fish are gently pumped to grading stations, then to purging and delivery units. This approach reduces stress on the fish while maintaining water quality and operational efficiency. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of the RAS model, where waste and water loss are minimised through careful system engineering.
Advanced RAS and water treatment
Water treatment is a critical success factor for any RAS facility. Blue Aqua’s Smart Farm applies a multi-barrier approach, combining mechanical and biological filtration, carbon dioxide degassing, oxygenation and ultraviolet sterilisation. Together, these processes enable the recycling of more than 90 percent of system water, minimising discharge while providing fish with a stable, clean and biosecure environment. Compared to conventional aquaculture, this significantly reduces environmental impact, protects freshwater resources and prevents effluent release into natural ecosystems.
Engineering for tropical conditions
Rainbow Trout naturally thrive in cold rivers and streams. Replicating these conditions in Singapore, where temperatures average 28-32°C with high humidity, required a complete rethinking of farm design. Without intervention, the difference between chilled water and hot humid air would cause condensation and biosecurity risks. To address this, the facility was constructed using polyisocyanurate (PIR) sandwich panels for walls and extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam boards for floors.
PIR panels provide excellent insulation with low thermal conductivity, while also being lightweight, non-combustible and durable. XPS boards offer high compressive strength and long-term thermal resistance, ensuring floor stability and protecting underground piping. Together, these materials improve energy efficiency and maintain a reliable microclimate, reducing strain on the chilling system. Stable water and air temperature are essential for trout culture.
The company employs large-scale magnetic bearing chillers to distribute cooling efficiently across the site. The system incorporates sustainability-driven features, including variable speed drives to minimise energy surges, magnetic bearing assemblies that eliminate mechanical friction and direct-drive rotating units that reduce moving parts and energy demand. The chillers operate with R1234ze, an environmentally friendly refrigerant with ultra-low global warming potential, fully compliant with Singapore’s environmental standards.

Strengthening food security
From a food security perspective, the project provides a stable, traceable and biosecure source of fresh trout. It reduces reliance on imports and wild fisheries that face challenges such as overfishing, diseases and seasonal supply fluctuations. Daily harvests under controlled conditions allow Blue Aqua to directly support Singapore’s ‘30 by 30’ goal of producing 30 percent of national nutritional needs locally by 2030. Local production also eliminates the need for air-freighting chilled trout from cold-water regions.
Replacing imports with locally farmed trout strengthens resilience while reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with long-haul transportation, supporting Singapore’s climate commitments. The Rainbow Trout project also builds on the company’s long-standing shrimp operations. For many years, the company’s shrimp farms have been recognised for sustainable aquaculture practices, and these are now being transitioned into RAS models as well. This creates operational synergies, with shared expertise and infrastructure, while diversifying the seafood supply for consumers. The result is a broader selection of fresh, locally produced and responsibly farmed proteins for Singapore.
Future outlook
The indoor Rainbow Trout farm is under construction and will be ready by the end of 2025, with the first harvest of pan-size trout reaching consumers in 2026. Once operational, the project will secure a steady, biosecure and sustainable supply of fresh trout for the domestic market. In the future, the farm may also export premium Rainbow Trout to neighbouring countries, delivered fresh from tank to table.
By doing so, the company is positioning Singapore not only as a reliable producer but also as a regional hub for climate-adapted, sustainable aquaculture.
