TidalX AI and Mowi Genetics AS have announced an expansion of their strategic collaboration. TidalX AI provides underwater perception and AI systems, while Mowi Genetics AS is the genetics and breeding division of Mowi.
As part of the collaboration, Mowi will deploy Tidal’s proprietary fish identification technology to support its breeding and genetics programme. The project is intended to strengthen precision individual phenotyping alongside existing population-level monitoring.
The expanded partnership builds on Tidal’s work within Mowi’s commercial farming operations, where its integrated systems automate lice counting, welfare monitoring, biomass estimation and feeding processes. The new phase of the collaboration will focus on genetics, with Tidal’s AI technology enabling the tracking of individual fish without the use of physical tags. This allows continuous, non-invasive collection of data on traits including growth, disease resistance and welfare.
The increased level of data detail is expected to support more accurate phenotyping for breeding candidates and improve broodstock selection for future generations.

Matt Baranski of Mowi Genetics AS said, “Tidal has already become a highly valued partner in Mowi’s day-to-day farming operations, delivering higher-resolution monitoring of sea lice counts and biomass, along with novel phenotypes linked to fish health and welfare. It is a natural evolution to now bring that capability into our genetics program. Shifting from pen-level monitoring to understanding individual fish could significantly improve selection decisions, enabling the next generation to be chosen using continuous, real-world performance data.”

Rochak Sharma, Chief Product Officer of TidalX AI, added, “Our vision extends far beyond basic farm monitoring to optimize the entire value chain. This AI technology will not only provide us more precise biomass estimates but also allow for limiting individual exposure during in-pen lice treatments. Bringing the same AI into genetics can create significant gains for breeding programs. By directly linking farm-level performance to biological design, Tidal’s AI is unlocking the next level of gains in efficiency and sustainability for salmon farming.”
