Victory Farms has become the first tilapia farm in Kenya, and indeed in Africa, to join the Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP) under the Improver Programme by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). This significant milestone is seen as a major advancement for responsible seafood farming across the continent.
Covering 50 hectares in Kenya’s Homa Bay region, Victory Farms produces 18,000 tonnes of tilapia each year and manages the entire process from hatchery to market. By joining the ASC programme, the company demonstrates its commitment to ethical farming and environmental care.
Roy van Daatselaar, Head of the Improver Programme at ASC, stated, “This is a landmark achievement not just for Victory Farms, but for Africa’s seafood farming sector as a whole. We are thrilled to support Victory Farms as they choose change and raise the bar for tilapia farming in the region.”
The AIP will involve working closely with ASC to identify improvement areas, implement best practices, and monitor progress. This initiative aims to enhance animal welfare and promote responsible feed usage, serving as a model for other aquaculture producers in Africa.
