Vietnam’s feed industry is gaining momentum, driven largely by robust demand for aquafeed, according to the latest report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Total feed consumption in 2025 is projected at 28.3 million metric tons (MMT), with aquaculture playing a leading role, and is expected to rise to 29.2 MMT in 2026. The sector’s resilience is notable, given disruptions from African swine fever (ASF) and natural disasters, which have affected pork production and shifted consumer preferences toward poultry and fish.
Aquaculture remains a bright spot, with catfish and shrimp exports reaching US$1.4 billion and US$3 billion, respectively, in the first nine months of 2025. The growing export demand underscores the need for high-quality, cost-effective aquafeed ingredients. Domestic corn and imported dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) are playing an increasingly important role in feed formulations. Corn production for marketing year (MY) 2025/26 is forecast at 4.1 MMT, while corn imports are expected at 12.5 MMT and DDGS imports at 982,000 MT, with the US, Brazil and India as top suppliers.
The Vietnamese feed sector is also adopting sustainability initiatives. Contract farming partnerships with local corn growers are improving yields, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing the availability of domestic ingredients for feed production. These efforts align with growing global interest in sustainable aquaculture feed.
For aquafeed companies, Vietnam represents a dual opportunity: supplying quality feed to a growing domestic aquaculture sector and leveraging the country’s expanding export market. As seafood production rises and livestock demand faces volatility, aquafeed is becoming a cornerstone of Vietnam’s feed industry, offering both volume growth and innovation opportunities in sustainable feed ingredients.
