The US federal government has unveiled the Strategic Plan for Aquaculture Economic Development, marking the completion of the White House’s National Aquaculture Development Plan, the first in 40 years. This comprehensive initiative aims to expand the domestic aquaculture industry and strengthen its contribution to the US economy.
The plan outlines four primary goals for the federal government: enhancing aquaculture engagement and literacy, supporting infrastructure and workforce development, encouraging industry investment, and expanding market opportunities for US aquaculture products. These priorities are intended to position the aquaculture sector for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
The new plan builds on two earlier components of the National Aquaculture Development Plan, both finalised in 2022. The National Strategic Plan for Aquaculture Research established federal priorities for research and technology, while the Strategic Plan to Enhance Regulatory Efficiency in Aquaculture focused on improving the efficiency, predictability, and cost-effectiveness of the regulatory process.
Efforts to expand U.S. aquaculture have been underway for years. On April 7, 2020, President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at fostering domestic aquaculture by removing permitting barriers, improving regulatory transparency, and establishing Aquaculture Opportunity Areas. Advocates have maintained that these measures are essential to reducing the country’s reliance on seafood imports and developing a sustainable domestic aquaculture base.
With the release of the Strategic Plan for Aquaculture Economic Development, federal agencies are poised to take further action to support industry growth, improve public understanding of aquaculture, and position the United States as a leader in sustainable seafood production.
