Xelect Names Habitat as New Genetics Partner for Coho Salmon

Aquaculture genetics specialist Xelect has announced a new partnership with aquaculture developer Habitat to support genetics and breeding programme development for Coho (Silver) salmon.

Under the collaboration, Xelect will design and deliver a bespoke selective breeding programme tailored to Habitat’s long-term goals for sustainable, land-based salmon production. Habitat is focused on next-generation aquaculture systems, including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) integrated with nutrient capture for agricultural use, aiming to enhance production efficiency and environmental performance.

As part of the partnership, the two companies will work together to consolidate existing genetics within a single nucleus breeding platform that can support efficient multiplier group production. The joint effort reflects a shared interest in advancing genetically robust broodstock for year-round, all-female, disease-free egg production at Habitat’s land-based facilities.

This partnership strengthens our commitment to helping innovative land‑based producers like Habitat build world‑class genetics platforms,” said Dr. Marie Smedley, Global Head of Xelect.

Xelect manages selective breeding programmes for aquaculture species globally and provides genetic consultancy, laboratory services, and breeding programme management from its headquarters in St Andrews, Scotland.
