Global fishmeal production increased by about 8% in the first half of 2025, while fish oil output rose approximately 5% compared to the same period last year. According to IFFO’s market intelligence, this growth is largely due to higher production across most regions, except for Northern Europe. Peru, a key player in the market contributing around 20% to global fishmeal and fish oil, saw anchovy fishing extend into late July this year, a move that has influenced global supply and market trends.
“Global fishmeal and fish oil production is consistent with IFFO’s 2025 estimates at 5.6 million tons of fishmeal and 1.2-1.3 million tons of fish oil,” said Dr. Enrico Bachis, Market Research Director at IFFO.
These findings come from data provided by IFFO members from various countries, representing 40% of global fishmeal and 50% of fish oil output.
In China, the lifting of fishing bans across key areas has raised hopes, yet the wild catch outlook for the rest of 2025 remains uncertain. Although domestic marine ingredient production dropped in early 2025, aquaculture has seen encouraging performance despite challenging weather conditions.
The peak period for aquafeed production is currently active and will last until October. Fishmeal consumption in aquaculture so far has outpaced last year’s figures, aided by improved profitability in several farmed species. However, lower piglet prices have dampened demand for fishmeal in the pig farming sector.
