Krill meal boosts salmon health during seawater transfer, study claims

A recent study highlights the positive impact of krill meal on Atlantic salmon as they transition from freshwater to seawater. Conducted by Skretting in collaboration with Aker QRILL Company, this first commercial-scale field trial indicates that feeds containing QRILL Aqua can enhance salmon survival and growth during one of their life’s most challenging phases.

The seawater transfer period often presents significant risks for salmon, including appetite suppression, osmoregulation stress, and increased disease susceptibility, leading to higher mortality rates. Data reveals that losses are particularly high in the initial months at sea, raising concerns for both the industry and fish welfare.

“By combining Skretting’s feed expertise with QRILL Aqua’s proven nutritional benefits, we were able to test under real farming conditions. This is a strong example of how collaboration can advance solutions for the industry,” says Kjetil Berge, R&D Leader at Skretting.

In the 116-day trial at a commercial salmon farm in Harstad, Norway, researchers compared two diets: one with 15% fishmeal and another with 10% krill meal, reducing fishmeal by a third.

The findings indicate that salmon fed a QRILL Aqua diet consumed 3% more feed, experienced 22% lower mortality rates, and exhibited 4.8% higher growth rates.

These results point to the potential for improved fish welfare and increased farm productivity. Kaur observes, “As feed formulations shift toward more plant-based proteins and novel ingredients, farmers face challenges like reduced palatability, nutrient imbalances, and competition with human food. The study is titled Krill Meal Boosts Growth and Survival in Atlantic Salmon Smolts After Seawater Transfer and is published in the Turkish Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.
