Purina’s new reef project launched to improve marine ecosystems

In a marine conservation initiative, petfood company Purina has partnered with Oyster Heaven to restore the UK’s largest oyster reef off the North Norfolk coast. The project aims to introduce four million oysters to enhance marine ecosystems and improve water quality.

Native European oysters were once abundant along the UK’s coastline, playing a vital role in maintaining healthy marine environments. They act as natural filters, removing pollutants like excess nitrogen and fostering biodiversity. However, their decline over the past century has disrupted these ecosystems. The reintroduction of oysters through new reefs is expected to restore water clarity and boost local wildlife.

The first deployment of specially designed clay structures, known as Mother Reefs, is scheduled for August. These reefs will provide homes for juvenile oysters and support larger-scale additions. By the end of 2026, the project anticipates the installation of 40,000 Mother Reefs, housing four million young oysters, in collaboration with Norfolk Seaweed, a local aquaculture business.

Purina is also making strides with its broader Ocean Restoration Programme, launched last year. The company aims to restore 1500 hectares of marine habitat by 2030 across various European countries, including France, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal.

Kerstin Schmeiduch, Director of Sustainability at Purina Europe, stated, “We are thrilled to be working with Oyster Heaven, marking an important step towards improving marine restoration along the Norfolk coastline. As marine biodiversity faces significant challenges, it is essential that we come together for collective restoration efforts.”

George Birch, Founder of Oyster Heaven, added, “Building an oyster reef is all about large numbers to create population tipping points and provide a suitable habitat. It starts with the creation of Mother Reefs, specially designed clay structures, pre-charged with over a hundred baby oysters, known as spats, to ensure their survival and growth.”

This new oyster restoration site is a milestone for Purina and Oyster Heaven, contributing to the largest oyster restoration initiative in Europe, alongside an existing project in the Veerse Meer, Netherlands, the company notes.
