Land-based salmon farming company Laxey has signed an agreement with Marel for processing equipment and software for its planned salmon slaughterhouse. This is the third agreement the company has made in the last few months.
Earlier in January, Laxey selected AKVA Group to provide equipment for its land-based salmon farm in Iceland. The company originally planned a 10,000 metric tonne facility but has since expanded its plans to a 32,000 metric tonne capacity. In November, Laxey also finalised a deal with BAADER for processing equipment.
The new agreement with Marel includes the installation of the Smartline Grader and AXIN software. The AXIN software will provide real-time data, helping to improve production processes and support decision-making. Marel’s Smartline Grader will assist in quickly sizing and grading the salmon. Kristmann Kristmannsson, Laxey’s Processing and Procurement Manager, emphasized the importance of production efficiency and traceability in the process. Laxey has completed the first phase of its Vestmannaeyjar-based operation in Iceland, with the first batch of fry transferred into the facility in late 2024. The company expects its first harvest in autumn 2025. Marel’s Vice President of Fish, Skúli Sigurðsson, expressed pride in supporting Laxey’s efforts to set new standards in aquaculture.
