
Benchmark Genetics, a leader in aquaculture genetics, has officially joined Novo Holdings’ portfolio of life science companies. The acquisition, completed on 31 March, marks a significant step in the company’s expansion and innovation within the global aquaculture industry. Benchmark Genetics will now operate under private ownership with its headquarters based in Bergen, Norway.
The acquisition aims to position Benchmark Genetics as a global leader in the aquaculture sector. The company will focus on enhancing its salmon and shrimp breeding programs, expanding into new markets and species, and investing in global production and nucleus facilities. These efforts are expected to improve biosecurity, production capacity, and supply security, with a focus on sustainability and genetic advancement.
Benchmark Genetics also announced that it has gained full ownership of its land-based breeding facility in Salten, Norway, as part of the deal. This move will strengthen its operational capabilities and ensure year-round supply security.
Novo Holdings, a prominent investor in life sciences, has a proven track record of supporting companies that drive sustainability and innovation. The acquisition aligns with Novo Holdings’ declared focus of improving global food production and sustainability. This is the second investment in the aquaculture sector by Novo Holdings, following its recent acquisition of Stingray Marine Solutions.
With the backing of Novo Holdings, Benchmark Genetics will continue to expand its genetic and genotyping services, helping aquaculture producers worldwide enhance performance and sustainability.
The deal, valued at up to £260 million, includes an initial payment of £230 million with additional potential payments based on revenue milestones.
