PTG Frionordica secures contract with Salmon Evolution

PTG Frionordica AS has signed an agreement with Artec Aqua AS to supply six advanced heat pumps and seawater exchangers for the second construction phase of Salmon Evolution’s innovative land-based aquaculture facility at Indre Harøy. With a combined heating capacity surpassing 100,000 kW, this delivery cements PTG Frionordica’s reputation as a leader in sustainable aquaculture technology.

“This contract is a significant milestone for us as we continue to focus on the market for land-based salmon farming,” said Johnny Valle, Sales and Marketing Director at PTG Frionordica. “It reinforces our position as a leading manufacturer and supplier in this sector.”

The Ålesund-based Artec Aqua, the main contractor for phase two, previously collaborated with PTG Frionordica during the facility’s first construction phase. Their positive experience played a key role in extending the partnership.

The new heat pumps will be delivered starting in August 2025, ensuring consistent production at PTG Frionordica’s Malmefjorden factory. Employing 60 staff and apprentices, the factory is well-positioned to handle the complex manufacturing requirements.

Each heat pump is a feat of engineering, capable of heating approximately 40,000 liters of water per minute with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) exceeding 12. Each unit contains over 12 km of titanium tubing, 5,000 welds, and weighs more than 20 tonnes.

“These are exceptionally efficient heat pumps. For every kilowatt of energy we input, we get more than 30 kW in return when considering the entire energy system,” said Arild Vikan, Project Manager at Salmon Evolution. “This outstanding efficiency not only reduces energy consumption but also ensures optimal fish health and growth, as precise temperature control is critical to the aquaculture process.”
