The UK seafood sector has stepped up its international ambitions at Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, showcasing export-ready products and securing fresh government backing to expand its presence in global markets.
The event’s announcement of a £1.5 million yearly Seafood Exports Package shows the UK government’s strong support for boosting growth and creating new opportunities for British seafood farmers around the globe. The action is taken as industry participants want to profit from the growing demand for premium, sustainably sourced seafood around the world.
More than 35,000 professionals from 150 countries attended the expo, providing UK exhibitors with a vital platform to engage with international customers, showcase innovation, and build commercial ties. Businesses that took part in the UK pavilion emphasised the nation’s standing for superior quality, reliable provenance, and ethical production methods.
With more than 11,000 miles of coastline, the UK offers a wide variety of seafood, including Welsh lobster, Yorkshire brown crab, and Cornish sardines, as well as regional delicacies such as Atlantic cod, haddock, and mackerel. This diversity, along with cutting-edge processing techniques and environmentally friendly harvesting practices, keeps the UK competitive in international markets.

Leaders in the industry stressed that the UK’s people are just as important to its seafood industry as its natural resources. To provide consistent quality and satisfy international standards, skilled coastal communities throughout the nation offer generations of expertise by fusing traditional knowledge with cutting-edge techniques.
Angela Eagle, UK Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs, described the expo as a crucial opportunity to promote British seafood globally. “Seafood Expo Global is a vital opportunity to showcase the very best of UK fish and shellfish on the world stage,” she said, highlighting the industry’s commitment to sustainability, transparency and high production standards.
Colin Faulkner, CEO of Seafish, echoed this, citing the industry’s robust supply chains and strict safety regulations as crucial differentiators. He pointed out that a lot of UK companies also have internationally renowned certifications, which strengthen their reputation with customers throughout the world.
The GREAT Britain & Northern Ireland campaign, which promotes British food and drink abroad, includes the UK’s participation in Seafood Expo Global. The business is setting itself up for long-term expansion on the international scene as exporters keep forming alliances and investigating new markets.
